Third Circuit Court of Appeals Essay Contest Winner

Monday, June 30, 2025

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals hosted an essay contest for fifth and sixth-grade students within the Third Circuit, which includes New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The essay prompt was “How did our Nation’s Founders envision ‘the People’ when they drafted the Constitution, and how should we interpret their vision in our country today?” The essay was able to be written by an individual student or by an entire class. Chief Circuit Judge Michael A. Chagares noted that “It is incumbent on us, as federal judges, to engage with our youth and to offer a robust civics education program.” In the Middle District, our judges actively endeavor to do exactly that and participating in this essay contest is just one of many ways that they do. Our winner in MDPA was Jonathan Valle. Jonathan Valle is a sixth-grade student who is home-schooled and submitted his entry individually. On May 16, 2025, Jonathan, along with his parents and his three sisters came to the Sylvia H. Rambo United States Courthouse in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to be acknowledged for his wonderful essay and to receive his certificate. Judge Wilson, Judge Mehalchick, and Judge Mannion all took the bench to hear Jonathan read his essay, congratulate him for his hard work, and talk with him and his family about the importance of the Constitution in our everyday lives.
